Brothers bond for business – Macomb Daily

Growing up in the Phoenix area as two of seven siblings, Steve and Tack Alanis had to learn to share.

Now the two brothers share two businesses under one roof.

Steve, a US Navy veteran, runs a Detroit Wing Company franchise, while Tack, who played football for California State University, has a Beyond Juicery + Eatery store. Both locations are located in a 2,500 square foot footprint on Mound Road, just south of 12 Mile Road in Warren.

“It’s the first dual-concept deal of its kind in the state,” said Steve Alanis. “You want the best wings, we’ve got them, and you can go next door for a smoothie to wash them down with.”

This is Detroit Wing Company’s 27th Michigan store and fifth location in Macomb County. It is part of DWC’s rapid expansion plans, which will see the company open more than 20 new locations by the end of 2023, with over 20 in development.

DWC offers all-natural chicken wings, tenders, 19 homemade specialty sauces, and a variety of side dishes, including three flavorful mac and cheese dishes.

Gus Malliaras, founder of Detroit Wing Company, said Warren has been on the company’s “wish list” for a long time.

“In Macomb County, we first opened our doors seven years ago, and since day one, the community has supported us and welcomed us with open arms,” Malliaras said in a statement.

After retiring from the service, Steve Alanis found work in the trucking industry before becoming a partner at Vivios sports bar at 12 Mile off Ryan Road.

Eventually he looked for other business opportunities. It was then that he decided to collaborate with his brother for the two-spot store.

Starting about 15 months ago, a construction team began renovating the former Donut Castle and turned it into a swanky looking building.

Beyond Juicery was founded by the eldest Alanis brother, Mijo. It’s a healthy, fast-casual grab-and-go joint specializing in smoothies, wraps, salads, light sandwiches, and raw juice.

“Because the Mound Road is such a busy area, this is more of a take-out place,” said Tack Alanis. “It’s built for speed.”

Despite being born 12 years apart, the brothers have bonded over the years.

“We share absolutely everything,” said Steve Alanis.

“Ever since Tack was old enough to walk, I’ve put him on my bike’s gas tank and we’ve been off and driving around. When he got older and entered high school, he moved in with me and stayed until he went to college.”

Their father, Gerald “Jab” Alanis, a former truck driver, credits raising the children.

“My wife is a good Christian woman who raised her, they listen to her,” said Jab Alanis, who came to Michigan to see his two sons open stores on Saturday.

To celebrate the opening of Warren DWC, the company is hosting a grand opening event where the first 25 guests will be entered into a drawing to win free chicken wings for a year. The first 100 guests will win a free limited edition DWC beanie hat, and the first 300 guests will receive a free six-piece chicken wings and fries combo.
