Bryce Harper’s injury casts shadow over Phillies plans for 2023

If there’s one bright spot in the news of Bryce Harper’s surgery announcement to Tommy John, it’s that the Phillies have been through this before.

It was late June when Harper suffered a fractured thumb after being hit by a pitch, missing two months and 52 games on the injured list. This was around six weeks after an MRI revealed a tear in his right UCL that forced him into permanent duties as batsman-designate.

None of that slowed Harper while he was in the lineup, and the hope from the Phillies’ standpoint is that the proceedings won’t affect his game-changing presence in the batter’s box. Still, the climb towards a return to the fall classic was undeniably steeper.
