Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup record: Portugal’s star became the first man to score in five World Cups at the 2022 finals

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player ever to score in five different World Cups with his goal against Ghana for Portugal in Qatar.

The 37-year-old has scored at every stage of the tournament since his debut at the 2006 edition in Germany.

And he made more personal history as he moved into the goalscoring charts as Portugal struggled for victory in Qatar.

Ronaldo’s World Cup goals

Ronaldo has only once scored multiple goals in a single World Cup, most recently when Russia hosted.

He is also yet to score in the knockout stages of the tournament, with all seven of his goals coming in the group stage.

Ronaldo at the World Cup

Despite winning Euro 2016 with Portugal, Ronaldo has also had a World Cup career that falls far short of the spectacular standards he has set in club competitions.

Ronaldo has scored at every World Cup he has been a part of, but his overall record at the finals is modest: eight goals in 18 games.

Ronaldo came closest to World Cup glory when he made his debut at the tournament in 2006, when Portugal lost to France in the semi-finals in Germany.

Since then, Portugal have underperformed – and they’ll be hoping for more in Qatar after reaching the finals thanks to play-off victories over Turkey and North Macedonia.

2006 semifinals 6 1
2010 round of 16 4 1
2014 group stage 3 1
2018 round of 16 4 4

Who else has scored in four finals?

Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in five different World Cup finals, but there are other players who have scored in four goals.

Portugal’s eternal rival Lionel Messi is of course on this list but it remains an exclusive club.
