LaLiga has long been home to a host of top players – and this season is no exception.
Barcelona and Real Madrid ooze quality, which was fully demonstrated in the battle for the top.
The Spanish top flight have provided the platform for some brilliant individual performances and LiveScore has handpicked the five most impressive players of 2022-23 to date.
Federico Valverde has quietly blossomed into one of the best midfielders in the world at Real Madrid.
The 24-year-old Uruguayan ensures a bundle of energy and verve in Real’s machine room.
Not only is he excellent off the ball, the midfielder is also enjoying a hugely productive season in the last third, having scored six goals and provided two assists.
Barcelona’s new signing Robert Lewandowski was very bad news for the rest of the league.
The forward has quickly settled into his new surroundings, scoring a staggering 13 goals in 14 games – the kind of batting average the Poland international has made the norm at Bayern Munich.
La Liga leaders Barca have had a brilliant start to the season and the form of 34-year-old Lewandowski in front of goal has been key.
Real Sociedad sit pretty much in third place and appear on course to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2012/13.
At the heart of their impressive performances is the creative Mikel Merino, 26, who has provided six assists and scored once in 14 LaLiga games this season.
Despite his initial difficulties following his move from Newcastle in 2018, Merino is now proving to be worth every penny of the £10.7million Sociedad paid for him.
Alejandro Balde has been one of Barcelona’s most impressive players this season after being promoted to the starting XI.
And it’s no surprise that Barca coach Xavi is full of praise for the 19-year-old left-back.
At the start of the campaign, he said: “I’m happy for [Balde]. He has great quality and character.
“It always amazes me that a player his age can play at this level. Physically he is fantastic and he will give us a lot.”
Balde was rewarded for his efforts with a place in Spain’s World Cup squad, replacing Jose Gaya who sprained his ankle in training.
Borja Iglesias has always scored at a decent rate in LaLiga but this season took his game to the next level.
The striker has eight goals and two assists in 13 games for Real Betis, an impressive return that would arguably put him in a great position to finish the season as the league’s top scorer – were it not for a certain Mr Lewandowski to get his work done of the division would exercise .
Iglesias’ best return since signing for Betis was 11 goals in 2020-21 – but he is on track to blow that tally out of the water.
