Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has explained that England star batter Joe Root – who is part of the modern day Fab-4 alongside Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson – will be “really useful for a lot of franchises” in India first League (IPL).
Former England captain Joe Root has proposed his name for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction, which will be held in Kochi on December 23. Modern batting champion Root is the only player among the Fab-4 not to have played a single game in the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL).
In a video shared on his official YouTube channel, Ashwin said Root wants to understand Indian conditions ahead of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be held entirely in India. He also opined that several franchises would be interested in having Root on their roster.
He stated: “Actually, it is a professional world. In the recently concluded T20 World Championship, we take a look at the England players. Most English players have a lot of experience in the Big Bash League in Australia.
“We always treat our guests very well. He is absolutely ready to come and play. We should only welcome him. He is already a legendary cricketer and also a part of Fab-Four. Williamson, Smith and Kohli have played in the IPL. Let Root play too.
“He can also roll decently off-spin. He will be very useful for many franchises with his T20 Cricket. He himself said that his experience will be really useful.”
Just when everyone was excited to see how Joe Root was doing at the auctions, he came out with another statement – Ravichandran Ashwin
The veteran off-spinner went on to say the former England captain would be looking to experience the excitement in the Indian Premier League.
He said: “Joe Root decides to put his name in the IPL auctions. His thought voice was like, “I want to know what the hype is about IPL because everyone around me, say Hales, Billings and even Buttler, is hyping IPL like everything else. So, I want to try it this year.”
“Just when everyone was curious to see how Joe Root was doing at the auctions, he came up with another statement. “The 2023 World Cup will be held in India. So I want to be with the IPL teams and understand the conditions and win the World Championship next year.’”
Root, 31, has never been picked up by an IPL franchise and has not participated in the auction since being unsold in 2018.
