Former Wolves full-back Matt Doherty said he was looking forward to seeing Ruben Neves represent Portugal at the World Cup.
Later in the day, Fernando Santos’ side finally get their campaign underway when they take on Ghana at 16:00 CET.
Many eyes are on Portugal after the explosive interview conducted by Cristiano Ronaldo last week.
The 37-year-old has since left Manchester United by mutual consent and many people are willing to watch Portugal to see how he is doing in particular.
But there are many other talented players in this Portuguese team.
One such person is Neves, who has been in superb form for Wolves this season.
Wanderers fought as a collective. But Neves has set a good example in midfield.
Doherty played with Neves at Molineux for three years and is very much looking forward to seeing him in action, as is Ronaldo.
He chose his ‘player to watch’ for his World Cup diary, saying: ‘I’ll go with someone I know and I hope he starts the game and that’s Ruben Neves in midfield for Portugal against Ghana.
“Even if he doesn’t compete, I’m sure he will come and influence the tournament. I know exactly what he’s capable of from my time at Wolves. Hopefully he starts.”
Neves played an important role in Portugal’s most recent season in the Nations League, starting all five games.
However, he played no role in the final friendly against Nigeria.
How high his commitment will be remains to be seen. But Santos will no doubt strongly consider him starting against Ghana.
Wolves fans will share Doherty’s thoughts on Neves, with the former Molineux full-back keen to see the Maestro join Portugal
So Portugal start their World Cup campaign today and it will be really interesting to see Santos’ starting XI.
Your squad is absolutely talented so it will be fascinating to see who they go with.
Neves – a £16m new signing from FC Porto for Wolves – has competition in the form of Danilo Pereira, Joao Palhinha and William Carvalho.
He may also line up with Wolves teammate Matheus Nunes, with Bernando Silva and Bruno Fernandes both likely starters in midfield.
It will be great to see Neves play in a team surrounded by world-class players.
Hopefully Santos will see the value in him and use him in that midfield position.
