The home side, frozen under the weight of anticipation, quickly fell behind in Sunday’s opener, losing 2-0 to Ecuador and being abandoned by their home crowd, who emptied the stadium in droves in the second half.

“Our nerves gave us away,” said coach Felix Sanchez. “We couldn’t line up four rounds in a row. Also many defensive gaps. The team wasn’t balanced and that hurt us a lot.”

A defeat at Doha’s Al Thumama Stadium would mean that Asian champions Qatar would become only the second World Cup hosts, after South Africa 2010, to fail to make it through the first round.

Sanchez, who for months leading up to the World Cup brought his players together almost like a club team, has promised a “more effective and competitive” side but after the opener it will take a lot more against Senegal.

It can’t afford the defensive weaknesses and fluttering of goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb, who marked his World Cup debut on Sunday.

Senegal missed a positive start by conceding two late goals against the Netherlands in Monday’s group opener, partly to blame for World Goalkeeper of the Year Edouard Mendy.

But while he is likely to keep his place, changes in the starting XI will be imposed on coach Aliou Cisse after midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate was forced off the field with a thigh muscle tear and defender Abdou Diallo with a hamstring strain.

There is also likely to be a change in attack where Senegal could start with an additional attacker in Bamba Dieng.

“Football is about efficiency, if you don’t score you can’t win,” said Cisse, who lost talisman Sadio Mane before the tournament started.

Mane’s absence was particularly noticeable against the Dutch as Senegal brought pace and determination to the attack.

“We will work on it. The fact that we lost our opening game will motivate us,” added the coach.

“Not everything we did was bad, it’s up to us to right our mistakes.”
