When it comes to all-American competitions, you probably think of races like the Boston Marathon, the New York Marathon, and even the Chicago Marathon.
Or maybe you’re thinking of the fun and frolic that accompanies the Naperville Rotary Sunrise St. Patty’s Day 5K on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. In March, the popular fundraiser precedes the annual WSI St. Patrick’s Parade. Both events aim to plant the green to create some greenery for local charities.
The first known turkey trot began in Buffalo, New York in 1896
However, according to the “Interesting Facts” in our inbox, the honor goes to the Buffalo Turkey Trot, a five-mile race hosted by the YMCA in Buffalo, New York that dates the longest-running of all foot races back in 1896.
2022 Naperville Noon Lions Club Turkey Trot marks its 25th anniversary
Milestones are worth noting, so on Thanksgiving Day 2022 local Lions and their volunteers will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Naperville Noon Lions Club Turkey Trab 5K. The family-friendly event is also a community fundraiser that supports many local charities at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24 from Naperville Central High School.
Afterwards, crowds gather at pubs like Quigley’s Irish Pub in downtown Naperville to cheer on the turkey trot contestants. And this year, revelers will likely be watching the World Cup (Portugal vs. Ghana, kicks off at 10am) on Thanksgiving morning.
Additionally, considering a national tally won’t be ruffling feathers, it’s reported that more than 200 Turkey Trots are expected to weave through local communities across the US this Thanksgiving, all inspired by the original race more than 125 years ago .

The race begins at 8 a.m. on Hillside, the street behind Naperville Central High School. The race is chipped time so no need to crowd. The individual race time begins at the start line, not at the starting gun.
After the Turkey Trot 5K 2022, you can simply save the date for next year. Bottom up!
