The long, long, long-awaited sci-fi sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is currently on track to make it big at the box office. predictions made Avatar: The Way of Water Opening at around $150 million domestically when it hits theaters next month, with follow-up (via Variety) claiming the film could even hit $175 million and up. The audience is clearly ready to return to Pandora.
Avatar: The Way of Water received a major boost earlier this week when it was announced that the sequel had been approved for release in China. For comparison, a $150 million opening would almost double the opening of the first avatar in 2009, which managed to gross $77 million before becoming the biggest film of all time thanks to its $2.7 billion grossing.

Luckily the box office predictions for Avatar: The Way of Water are looking good because the sequel has to go big to be a success. As a matter of fact, Avatar: The Way of Water have to make it big enough to be one of the greatest movies of all time… just to break even. Director James Cameron recently described the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water as “very damn” expensive and called the film “the worst business case in film history. They must be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. This is your threshold. This is your breakeven point.”
