Wales vs Iran LIVE: World Cup 2022 latest results, goals and updates as Gareth Bale breaks record

Fifa World Cup: Results and Reactions from Day 5 in Qatar

Wales meet Iran in Group B of the World Cup in Qatar. Wales drew 1-1 with USA in their first World Cup game in 64 years, when Gareth Bale’s penalty capped a dramatic second-half comeback.

The substitution of Kieffer Moore helped turn the tide and gives Wales a chance to qualify for Group B, but the result they get against Iran could make their hopes more decisive.

Iran were beaten 6-2 by England in their opening game, in which their players failed to sing the national anthem in support of protesters in the country, and would be all but eliminated from the World Cup if they lost to Wales. Rob Page’s side meet England in their last game of the group stage, underscoring the importance of their clash against Iran at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

Bale will be Wales’ best-ever performance with his 110th cap and it would be fitting if the captain and talisman of the nation created another big moment on the international stage.

Wales 0-0 Iran

3 mins: Ehasn Hajsafi is fouled when the ball is slammed into midfield and Iran’s Saeed Ezatolahi slides a quick free-kick down the left wing. Iran can then not use the fast game, as a pass into the penalty area is sure to roll out.

Chance! A long ball across the field comes to Kieffer Moore, who wins the airball and nods it in the back for Harry Wilson’s run. Wilson throws the ball to the ground before pushing the ball to Neco Williams.

Williams checks to the right, then laces a curl just over the far top corner!

Kick-off: Wales 0-0 Iran

Here we go. Wales will know that with three points they are close to qualifying for the last 16 and if they lose they will be close to being eliminated from the tournament.

They have to start better than against the USA, where they were sluggish in the first half and gave their opponents free rein.

Wales gets the ball rolling and the game is on.

Gareth Bale tells schools in Wales to treat clash with Iran as ‘little history lesson’

Gareth Bale has urged teachers in Wales to give children a ‘little history lesson’ on the World Cup in Qatar. Wales’ second game at the 2022 World Cup gets underway at 10am GMT on Friday when the kids are in class.

The PA news agency announced earlier this month that children have been given the green light to support Robert Page’s side.

The Welsh Government has left it up to individual schools to decide whether to allow children to watch the game and Bale wants as many of them as possible to do so.

Williams’ grandfather died on Sunday and the Nottingham Forest full-back shared the sad news on social media after playing in Wales’ 1-1 draw with the United States.

“Yesterday was the worst news I’ve ever faced and that was when my mom was listening to me hear my grandfather died last night,” Williams wrote Monday night, dedicating the game and pointing to his late grandfather.

“It was extremely hard going from crying all day to starting a World Cup game, but I got through it thanks to the support of my teammates and family.”

Wales fans miss World Cup match against Iran due to permit card issues

Many Welsh fans are unable to attend their second match of the 2022 World Cup against Iran on Friday after being turned away at the airport.

Many fans attending the finals in Qatar are staying in Dubai and flying to Doha for the games, but dozens are reporting that the Hayya permit card, required to enter the country for games, was not working properly, which was resulted in their being refused entry.

That’s despite some of those fans attending Wales’ other game, a 1-1 draw with USA in their Group B opening game earlier in the week. However, on this occasion, some approvals are shown as “pending” approval, prompting airport staff to deny boarding to these passengers.
